For a first sample in a family garden, we suggest Jersey 30mm: it gives you a relatively neat pile to compare, a soft flat-yarn finish and a wide choice of roll widths. Add California 38mm if you prefer a fuller-looking lawn, Bodrum 40mm for a value-focused deeper-pile comparison, or Status Pet 35mm if dogs also use the space.
This guide compares Status Grass products for ordinary domestic garden use. Recommendations are based on recorded specifications and selectable sizes checked on 13 October 2026, not independent testing with children. A soft-feeling lawn is not automatically a tested impact-absorbing surface beneath swings, slides or climbing frames.

Our family-garden shortlist
| Product | Suggested comparison | Specification to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Jersey 30mm Artificial Grass Order a sample |
Our starting sample for an everyday family lawn | 30mm flat yarn; selectable widths from 1m to 5m | Compare the feel with a deeper sample; height is not a safety rating. |
|
California 38mm Artificial Grass Order a sample |
A fuller, multi-tone lawn appearance | 38mm pile; emerald and olive fibres; 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m widths | Colour and texture may matter more than the extra pile depth. |
|
Bodrum 40mm Artificial Grass Order a sample |
A deeper pile on a value-focused shortlist | 40mm C-shaped straight yarn; drainage holes listed | A taller pile does not establish better wear or impact protection. |
|
Status Pet 35mm Artificial Grass Order a sample |
A family garden also used by dogs | 35mm pile; described double PP cloth backing | Regular waste removal and rinsing are still needed. |

Best starting sample for everyday use: Jersey 30mm
Jersey has a 30mm pile, flat yarns, three green shades and brown curly fibre. Its selectable 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m widths give you useful options when planning the shape of a family lawn.
Start here if your preference is a neat garden appearance rather than the deepest possible pile. Compare a sample in the garden and feel the fibres yourself. Pile height alone does not establish wear resistance or impact protection.
For a fuller-looking finish: California 38mm
California uses emerald and olive straight fibres with green-yellow curly fibres. It is a useful second sample if you want more visible fibre depth than Jersey and a different colour mix.
Compare both in the same light with their fibres facing the same direction. The recorded California width options include 3m as well as 2m, 4m and 5m, which can help with a garden that would otherwise need an awkward join. A fuller appearance does not prove that the surface will absorb a fall.
For a deeper pile at a lower material price: Bodrum 40mm
Bodrum is a useful value-focused comparison within this shortlist. The specification describes a 40mm pile, C-shaped straight yarn and a PP and mesh-scrim backing with latex coating; drainage holes are listed.
Compare the cost of the complete roll plan as well as the rate per m². If the grass needs more cutting waste or extra joins for your layout, the cheapest material rate may not give the lowest finished project cost. Sample the pile rather than assuming that 40mm will feel better than every 30mm grass.
For homes with children and dogs: Status Pet 35mm
Status Pet 35mm is worth including when the lawn is shared with dogs. Its description specifies double PP cloth backing, and its product record lists drainage holes. Choose it as a pet-focused comparison, then plan how the base and cleaning routine will work.
Remove pet waste promptly and clean the affected area before children use it. Follow the grass and cleaner instructions, including any directions about rinsing and re-entry. An antibacterial description does not mean cleaning can be skipped. See our guide to cleaning artificial grass after dogs.
What if the lawn will sit under play equipment?
Choose the surface together with the equipment and installation plan. Ask for documentation covering the complete proposed surfacing system and its suitability for the equipment's fall height. The grass, any shockpad, base and installation details matter; simply adding a generic foam layer does not establish a tested system.
RoSPA's play-area surfacing guidance explains the role of impact-attenuating surfaces and the importance of supporting test information. Our product shortlist above is not a certification for playground use. For equipment areas, have the proposed system specified by someone competent in that type of installation.
Think about heat, cleaning and edges
Artificial grass can become very hot in sunshine. Devon's public-health guidance highlights the risk from hot outdoor surfaces, including artificial grass. Check conditions before children use the lawn, especially barefoot, and use a cooler, shaded alternative if the surface is hot. UV stabilisation is not a promise of a cool surface.
Plan secure edges and neat joins so the lawn does not bunch up along the routes people use. Clear toys and debris before brushing, deal with spills and inspect frequently used areas. Drainage holes in the turf still need a suitable route for water through or across the base.
Measure the whole project
Sketch the lawn, mark obstacles and plan each roll with a consistent pile direction. For example, a 2.8m by 4m rectangle has a finished area of 11.2m²; a 3m by 4m piece supplies 12m² before any additional length allowance. The supplied roll area is what matters when comparing grass costs.
Allow separately for preparation, edging, joins, fitting and delivery. Use our measuring guide and family-garden planning guide for the next steps.
Frequently asked questions
Which pile height is best for kids?
There is no universal height. For this domestic-lawn shortlist, compare 30mm, 35mm, 38mm and 40mm samples for feel, appearance and the upkeep you can manage. Pile height does not establish impact protection.
Are these grasses certified for use beneath play equipment?
Do not assume so. Ask for documentation covering the exact grass, underlay, base and installation required for your equipment.
Should I order the deepest pile for cushioning?
Choose deeper pile for the look and feel you prefer, not as a substitute for a documented safety-surfacing system. Compare samples before ordering the full amount.
