Best Artificial Grass for Dogs UK: Status Grass Buying Guide

For a practical starting point in the Status Grass range, we recommend comparing Status Pet 35mm first. It has the shortest pile and lowest current material rate of the three Status Pet options considered here. Choose Status Pet 40mm for a deeper family-lawn appearance, or compare Status Pet 50mm when a fuller finish is your preference.

The best artificial grass for dogs depends on the whole installation: turf, base drainage, edge fixing, available rinsing water and your cleaning routine. This guide compares our own products using their recorded specifications, checked on 13 October 2026. These recommendations are not independent test results or a ranking of measured drainage speed, antibacterial performance or resistance to a particular dog's behaviour.

1. Status Pet 35mm: our practical starting recommendation

Status Pet 35mm is the first sample we suggest for someone who wants a dog-focused lawn without opting for the deepest pile. Its description specifies double PP cloth backing and a five-tone appearance; the listed product weight is 2,428g per m².

The recommendation is based on its position in the range: a shallower pile and lower material price than the 40mm and 50mm alternatives. A shorter pile can make it easier to see the surface when checking for residue, but this is a practical choosing consideration rather than a measured clean-up result. Compare it in person before deciding whether the feel and colour suit your garden.

Order a sample. Keep a 40mm sample beside it if the lawn will also be a regular family sitting or play space.

2. Status Pet 40mm: compare for dogs and family use

Status Pet 40mm adds 5mm of nominal pile depth. The description specifies double PP cloth backing, while the recorded product weight is 2,640g per m². Include it when you want a deeper lawn appearance and are comfortable with the associated routine of inspection, rinsing and brushing.

The additional weight and height do not establish that it will resist every dog better than the 35mm product. Repeated running routes, digging at edges and the quality of the installation all affect wear. Choose the preferred sample, then make sure the base and perimeter are suitable for the way the space is used.

Order a sample. Compare both products with the fibres lying in the same direction.

3. Status Pet 50mm: compare for a fuller finish

Status Pet 50mm is the deepest option in this comparison. Its description specifies double PP backing, and the recorded product weight is 3,065g per m². It is worth considering when the fuller lawn appearance is your preference and you are prepared to maintain a deeper pile.

Do not choose it simply because the number is higher. Think about how readily you can inspect the fibres, rinse the most-used spots and brush the surface. The product also has a batch-colour note: 5m rolls may differ slightly in shade from the 2m and 4m versions. Confirm the proposed combination before ordering adjacent rolls.

Order a sample. Include a 35mm sample if you are unsure whether appearance or a lower profile matters more.

Backing and drainage: what the specifications establish

The three product records list drainage holes, and their descriptions identify PP backing. This is useful information for a shortlist, but the available specifications do not provide a comparable independently verified flow-rate test for all three products. We therefore do not award one a numerical drainage score.

Liquids need a route through the turf and away through or across the base beneath. A permeable grass cannot correct trapped water on an unsuitable surface. Before fitting, work out where rinse water will go, check any existing outlets and resolve persistent pooling. See our artificial grass drainage guide.

Cleaning and odour: plan the routine before buying

Pick up solid waste promptly, remove debris and rinse the areas your dog uses. Increase attention where use is concentrated or drainage is slower. If you use a cleaning product, follow its instructions and confirm it is suitable for the turf and the way the area is used.

The Status Pet descriptions include antibacterial and odour-related features. These do not justify a promise that the installation will never smell or that cleaning is unnecessary. We have not used those claims to assign a performance score. Persistent odour warrants checking for retained residue and a drainage problem rather than simply adding fragrance.

Use our dog clean-up guide alongside the product care instructions. A maintenance plan that you can keep up is more useful than choosing the deepest or most expensive option by default.

Heavy use, digging and secure edges

Think about the routes your dog repeatedly runs and the edges it can reach. Secure joins and perimeter fixing form part of the installation; they are not replaced by a pet-friendly product label. If digging or chewing is a regular behaviour, discuss the particular site and fixing plan before ordering.

A sample helps you compare texture and colour, but does not reproduce months of dog use or test the drainage of the finished garden. We have not scored pile recovery or damage resistance without comparable evidence.

Work out the grass cost and the roll layout

Plan the width and length of each piece rather than ordering only the finished square metres. For example, a 3.8m by 5m rectangle has an area of 19m², while a 4m by 5m piece supplies 20m² before any extra length allowance. Compare the current rate per m² using that supplied area, then include base work, edges, joins, fitting and delivery.

All three Status Pet options in this guide currently have 2m, 4m and 5m choices, but the right width depends on the shape of the garden. Keep neighbouring pieces in the same pile direction and confirm batch colour where widths are mixed. Read the measuring guide before finalising the cuts.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs pee on artificial grass?

Pet areas can be used for toileting, but urine still needs to be rinsed away through an appropriate drainage route. Check both the grass specification and the base, and maintain the areas your dog uses most.

Is shorter artificial grass always better for dogs?

No single pile height suits every household. We suggest starting with 35mm within this particular range, then comparing feel, appearance and the cleaning routine with the 40mm and 50mm options.

Will pet artificial grass stay odour-free?

No product description can guarantee that result for every installation. Cleaning, how the area is used and drainage beneath the grass all matter.

Should I choose the grass before preparing the base?

Choose the product and installation plan together. Check its fitting requirements, the surface below, drainage and edge details before buying materials or starting work.

Start with two or three samples, then compare the products below or browse our pet-friendly artificial grass collection.

Artificial grass installation guide

  1. Prepare the base

Clear turf, weeds and debris, then compact a suitable sub-base.

  2. Lay a membrane

Add a weed barrier and any required foam underlay.

  3. Roll out the grass

Allow it to settle, keep the pile direction consistent, and trim the edges neatly.

  4. Join and secure

Use joining tape and adhesive for seams, then secure the edges.

  5. Brush and finish

Brush fibres upright. Regular brushing keeps your lawn looking fresh.

Care and maintenance

Brush the fibres occasionally to keep the pile upright. Remove leaves and debris, and follow the care advice for your chosen grass.
