Artificial grass is usually priced per square metre, but the final order value depends on more than the headline £/m² figure. Roll width, the shape of the area, trimming allowance, joins, accessories and delivery can all affect the total.
This guide explains how to compare artificial grass prices properly and plan an order without relying on the square metre price alone.

How artificial grass pricing works
Most artificial grass product pages show a price per square metre. You then choose an available roll width and enter the length you need. The calculator uses those dimensions to work out the area of the piece and the product total.
For example, a 4m-wide roll cut to 5m long covers 20m². A 2m-wide roll cut to the same length covers 10m². The exact widths available depend on the product.
Why the cheapest £/m² option is not always the cheapest order
A lower-priced grass can still produce more waste if its available width does not suit the shape of your garden. A slightly more expensive product with a better-fitting roll width may reduce offcuts or the number of joins.
Before comparing totals, measure the area and sketch a layout. Our artificial grass measuring guide explains how to plan roll widths and trimming allowance.
Compare by price band
If you have a budget in mind, you can browse current products by price band:
- £5.00–£9.99 per m²
- £10.00–£14.99 per m²
- £15.00–£19.99 per m²
- £20.00–£24.99 per m²
- £25.00–£30.00 per m²
Prices and availability can change, so use the product page and basket for the current total before ordering.
What usually changes the price of artificial grass?
Price can reflect a combination of factors rather than one single specification. When comparing products, look at:
- Pile height: longer fibres can use more material, although pile height alone does not determine quality.
- Density and stitch rate: denser constructions may feel fuller and use more yarn.
- Fibre design and colour mix: different yarn shapes, shades and thatch can change the look and construction.
- Backing: backing construction and drainage design vary between products.
- Product weight: heavier products may contain more material, but compare the full specification rather than weight alone.
- Specialist features: products designed for particular applications can be priced differently from general garden turf.
Roll width affects the true cost
Artificial grass is supplied in fixed widths, so the width of your garden matters. A 3.2m-wide area may require a 4m-wide piece if that is the closest suitable width, leaving an offcut. In another layout, two narrower pieces might reduce waste but add a join.

Remember installation accessories
Your total project cost may also include joining tape, adhesive, membranes, edge-fixing materials, base materials or maintenance tools. The exact list depends on the surface and installation method.
See our artificial grass accessories and installation guide when planning the full project.
Should you order samples first?
Yes, particularly when you are comparing products in different price bands. A sample lets you judge colour, texture, pile and density before committing to a full roll. The cheapest option on screen may not be the one you prefer once you see it in your own space.

Delivery can affect the final total
Check the current delivery policy and the basket or checkout before placing the order. Large or long grass rolls may have different delivery requirements from smaller accessories or samples.

How to compare two artificial grass products fairly
- Measure the area and sketch the layout.
- Check the roll widths available for each product.
- Calculate the actual piece sizes you would need.
- Add any joins, trimming allowance and expected waste.
- Compare the product specifications, not only pile height.
- Order samples of the shortlist.
- Add accessories and delivery to the project total.
Frequently asked questions
Is artificial grass always sold by the square metre?
Artificial grass is commonly priced per square metre, but it is supplied in roll widths and cut lengths. The dimensions of the piece determine the actual quantity ordered.
Why do I need to pay for offcuts?
If a fixed roll width is wider than your finished area, the ordered piece may include material that is later trimmed away. Planning the layout carefully can help reduce unnecessary waste.
Does a higher price always mean better artificial grass?
Not automatically. The best product is the one that suits your use, appearance preference, maintenance expectations and budget. Compare samples and specifications before deciding.
